Veteran of the Depths

Driftwood with a natural ‘keel’ and a metal ‘conning tower’ — a miniature submarine of found wood. ‘Archipelago of Oblivion’ series.

Description

The ‘Archipelago of Oblivion’ series.

In this miniature sculpture, nature’s whimsical fantasy meets an industrial silhouette. A wide, outstretched piece of driftwood with a distinctive ‘keel’ and sharp ‘bow’ and ‘stern’ reproduces the shape of a submarine with surprising accuracy. The austere, almost graphic construction of two curved metal rods crowning the upper point of the wood instantly completes the image — the conning tower and periscope of a submarine ready to dive.

Every crack here is not a flaw but a map of the tree’s life. The work is a hymn to natural wear. The rough, flaking wood with its deep furrows creates a strikingly realistic texture of an old ship’s ‘hull’. Before us is a materialised metaphor of a long journey. A perfect accent for a study or a desk in japandi style.
