Spear of a Dormant Spirit

Description

I began with a form that was already almost complete — the trunk of the olive tree drew itself out into a point, asking on its own for verticality. My task was not to create movement but to arrest it: to remove what was excess, to leave openings piercing through where the wood was already prepared to give them up, and to fix that single moment where the throw has not yet begun, but is already inevitable.

I am not turning this thing into a weapon. There is direction, there is a point, but I deliberately withhold the target it flies toward. What interests me is precisely the gap between intent and stillness — the moment where force has already gathered, but has not yet passed into action.

The dark veins, the natural cavities, the irregularities of the trunk — I neither straighten nor smooth them. These are traces of the tree’s age, and I work with them, not against them. I use the white marble pedestal to visually lift the sculpture above the horizon — so that it holds itself in a suspended, ongoing state, rather than simply standing.

Frozen in flight—
deep within the warm old wood,
an ancient spirit sleeps.
