Petrified Time

An olive root in a shell of magical cubism — organic matter turned into crystal. A silent guardian of eternity speaking the language of geometry.

Description

In this work, the sculptor encases not just a piece of wood, but matter itself—eternity—in a geometric shell. The olive root, a witness to centuries who has seen epochs change, here ceases to be merely organic material. The artist forcibly extracts it from the natural cycle of life and death, as if subjecting it to an invisible alchemy that transforms flesh into crystal.
The piece belongs to the aesthetic of magical cubism. Broken lines and sharp edges do not simply divide the volume—they slice through the temporal continuum. The sculpture loses its natural relief but gains the illusion of a solid, unshakable mineral structure. The viewer sees not a root, but a cross-section of sedimentary rock; not wood, but a meteorite fallen from a parallel dimension.
The visual paradox of the work lies in its material. On one hand, we see the warm, living, astringent texture of olive wood, imbued with the scent of the Mediterranean sun; on the other, absolutely lifeless, cold, sterile angles more characteristic of rocky landscapes or man-made crystals. This is a conflict between the organic and the geometric, nature and civilization, intuition and reason. The through-hole at the top, like an “eye” or a “window,” exposes the irreversibility of time: through it emerges a void that did not exist before the material was “condemned” to petrification.
The static nature of this sculpture is deceptive. It is not frozen; it is lying in wait. There is a sense that the form has only just stopped moving, halting at the precise moment when chaos began to take on order. “Petrified Time” is a materialized paradox of existence: it looks like stone but breathes like something alive, fears touch yet is itself incapable of change. It is a silent guardian of the gallery space, reminding us that geometry is the language through which eternity speaks to us.
