Silent Passage: A Handcarved Abstract Olive Wood Sculpture

It’s moving. You can see it.

There are no motors in this sculpture, no gears, no explicit sign of life. But there is rhythm — a line stretching from left to right, coiling, dissolving, and gathering itself again into a single flow. “Silent Passage” is an attempt to capture motion without sound: something nameless simply gliding by, soundless and unstoppable.

A Current Instead of a Body

The winding grain of the olive wood doesn’t settle into a specific body here — it becomes the current itself, water split by something invisible.

Features That Slip Away From the Eye

An open mouth, a dark eye socket, tightly stretched wood fibers on the right — all of it reads as the features of a creature, only to dissolve back into abstraction the moment your gaze shifts. The sculpture doesn’t tell you who it is. It says: “Listen to the silence. Do you hear it? That was me, passing by.”

Material and Composition

The piece is carved from a solid mass of old olive wood, preserving its natural flaws and cracks. The long horizontal composition creates the illusion of continuous, utterly silent motion — as if the object were gliding through water without disturbing its stillness. The wood’s natural grain becomes a dynamic abstraction, balanced between recognizable form and a philosophical statement about time and silence.

In a soundless glide,
Tentacles remember waves—
Time stands frozen still.
